Blog: Sports Talk With Manouk

Whoopty Friggin' Doo.

The Eastern Conference has won the All-Star Game.

So I sat down and asked myself, does anybody give a Bill Walton about it?

Although the East won the glorified exhibition 134-128 after blowing several leads, do they really have a shot at winning anything else against the West this year?

The Western Conference is today, to what the "Beasts of the East's" were of the late 1980's and midway through the 1990's. The level of competition, talent, coaching, roster depth and playoff experience is so deep out west, that we shouldn't expect anything less than a 4-0 trashing similar to what San Antonio handed to Cleveland last June.

A perfect example of the disparity in talent and playoff positioning is that of Houston and Orlando.

Houston, which has a 32-20 record and a .615 winning percentage is currently out of a playoff spot being in 9th place out West. On the other coast, Orlando, one of the east's more dominant and improved teams, has a record of 33-21 and a .611 winning percentage. They are currently sitting with a seven game lead over Washington in their division.

What's the difference?

Orlando is third seed in the East and in a comfortable position. If you break down both rosters, Houston clearly has the upper hand with talent, coaching and yes, even having the fattest U.S. citizens of all major cities in the United States.

The only way these two teams can be compared on paper is:

Neither state has income tax...Perhaps that factored into Rashard Lewis decision this past summer? Or, was he thrilled for playing for a run-over coach like Stan "I need time off with my family then come back to coaching few months later cause I couldn't control the other Florida team" Van Gundy?

The only threat/cause for watching basketball eastern standard time is the entire Celtics and Pistons picture. Other than Boston's Big three, who else do they have? Their bench consists of players like Eddie House and Scott Pollard, players who have more ass-splinters due to pine time than minutes played in their careers.

The fact that teams like New Jersey (J. Kidd), Miami (Shaq), Philadelphia (A.I.) are dumping star players out west isn't benefiting them either. Everyone's fire sale for cap relief and fresh beginnings has a plethora of bidders out west that will make star players on the east, role players out west.

The level of competition is clearly out of balance. Clear all-star snubs Deron Williams, Chris Kaman, Marcus Camby, Pau Gasol, Baron Davis, Josh Howard, Al Jefferson, Manu Ginobli (Get the point?) were left off this years roster. Out East, the only omissions that will be argued are Jose Calderon, Josh Smith and Hedo Turkoglu, all of whom have more fantasy value than all-star value.

Just look at your latest standings and you'll see that there is a 4-game difference between seeds 1-9

Although, the only advantage for Eastern teams will be that the "Best from the West" will beat each other up until the bitter end and end up staggering in the Finals against a well-rested like Detroit.

So if anyone takes this east victory a little heavy and tough to digest, think again.

The east has not had a formidable and competitive stable of gamers ever since Jordan, Penny Hardaway, Shaq O'Neal, Grant Hill, Scottie Pippen, and Patrick  Ewing were mopping the floor with Western Conference rosters put together of Detlef Schrempf, Dan Majerle and Mitch Richmond.

Let us all save the conference supremacy talk for another three months. Stay tuned til' June.

the only person that can stop the Lakers is the team itself...once Ariza and Bynum come back, it will be very interesting to see how the team will perform as a cohesive unit, given the fact that Phil Jackson has done a great job setting
