Exclusive Interview: Junesflow E-mail
Written by Dub MD
Saturday, 06 December 2008
This week we got the chance to connect with M.I.C. Records / WorldFlow Ent. recording artist Junesflow (f.k.a. Jha Da 5'9"), who has just released his new mixtape project entitled "The Rustic Pt. 1" with Detroit's own DJ Mark Da Spark. June takes time out to chop it up about his new mixtape series, his thoughts on hip hop and his plans for the future. Make sure you download his new mixtape "The Rustic Pt. 1" at the end of the interview.
Dub MD: June, What's good?

Junesflow: Blue Dream, Headband, Sour Apple, Green Queen, O.G. and all purples!

Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now?

Junesflow: I smoked a lot so it's hard to say, people like my music so I guess it's been all good.

Dub MD: Coming from Detroit, what do you think of the Rock City music scene right now?

Junesflow: Dope! Inspired. Old beefs are over and new money is being made. Better relationships and more collabs. National and international exposure. More videos are being shot. New Detroit-based websites and forums. Radio DJ's reaching out to connect with the local talent, I could go on. Marijuana law just passed, It's gonna be a beautiful spring and summer!

Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers?

Junesflow: I think I spoke to you before about it briefly, and now that I have an example I can reiterate. Remember the rap group "Kid N' Play"? They had hits, movies, cartoons, and overall commercial success. I don't think they had a limit, but styles just changed in the game. So aside from just everything being about music, music, music, we can look to expand in the business world. I definitely got respect for the pioneers.

If you don't live this shit and got love for peeps before your time, You're a lame! But as you and I agreed before Dub, there has to be a "balance". Major success and love from the hometown or neighbourhood. That matters a lot to me.

Dub MD: Do you have a new project in the works? what's it called? and what can heads out there expect from it?

Junesflow: "The Rustic" mixtape. It's part 1 of 2 mixtapes I'm doing before the album in June. Mark Da Spark host part 1. He was a hood-favourite to me because he's been putting in work for the Detroit up and coming. Shout to DJ DDT too and Spudd. Damn, King David, Butter, Mase, Babe, Dommy, shit I shouldn't have started.

On this first mixtape, ain't shit but me, me, me! I put my little brother on there and recorded some verses over the phone because he on lock for a minute (Free Ill Gates!) The only other "feature" for this one is the joint with Royce. The second one is out on March 1st, 2009 with a lot of artists I haven't worked with in the U.S and beyond and a few returning, hosted by Dub MD! (Plug!)

Dub MD: With this project, what artists & producers are you connecting with this time round?

Junesflow: Just wanted to showcase a lot of new flows on this one so I didn't concentrate on gathering a lot of features. I check a few online forums from time to time and a lot of peeps never heard my music or only heard me featured on something else. I called Asar and got a 2-day session, completed the whole mixtape then.

Grabbed a freestyle me and Royce had laying around and had my brother leave some voicemail's so I could finally get him on a project of mine. I only leaked 2 joints from the album, so most of the mixtape are industry beats, current and personal favorites.

Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now?

Junesflow: Made a few contacts on the west coast, so I'm in L.A. to land the distribution for WorldFlow Entertainment / CityFlow Music.

Dub MD: You've release a few mixtapes over the past few years now, Where can fans out there get all your previous projects online?

Junesflow: By the time this interview is shared, www.junesflow.com will be fully up and running. We did a soft-launch to test some things out. That's the website we'll be adding a forum to and blogging on.

Dub MD: How do you feel you've changed as an emcee from the debut mixtape "A Million Wayz To Make A Million" up until now with "The Rustic Vol.1"?

Junesflow: I just wanted to stay in the flow, like under the beat and let the beat "take control". Now I wanna create something new every time with the beat. I can't say enough about staying a "student" of what you love. You learn something new everyday.

Dub MD: Bring creative and original emcee, why do you think it is that emcees with skills on the mic, never make a real mark on soundscan?

Junesflow: Promotion. It's obviously not the flows, if we're talking about dope MC's. Usually it's the lack of finance for competitive promotion. Then it depends on what that MC is going for. Not every dope MC want that spotlight and fame and are content with their numbers and following. I plan to go gold in the first hour. I expect peeps to be trampled under feet to get to my cd. Police in every state and country will have to have the K9 Units on deck, word.

Dub MD: You've got a lot of support from hip hop fans online, How important do you feel the internet is to an underground hip hop artist these days?

Junesflow: I expect to have an online presence no matter how far my career go. You actually develop bonds and establish history with peeps after awhile. That's why everyone that reads this interview will get a huge virus in their computers if you don't buy or properly download my first album!

Dub MD: Where do you get the inspiration to write the type of material you do? and what was the writing process like on your albums?

Junesflow: Drums and a sick bassline. It took about a year to record all the songs I have for this album, but that's because I didn't have a goal to make an official release. I had to look within. I really wasn't even in the mind-frame I'm in today. My album is definitely a complete album, a lot of peeps think they've heard a lot of the joints because I leaked a few online, no way.

Dub MD: You've been apart of Royce Da 5'9's camp since you were in high school, For those that don't know, How did you hook up with Royce back in the day?

Junesflow: Ryan! My high-school closed down in Detroit and I took a room in a relative's house in Oak Park, MI. I went to the high-school and we were on the basketball team. We used to record at studios around the area and do shows as "Da MainPhokus".

You'll probably never hear any of those joints unless our older homie come through with the tapes they're on. We thought we'd name ourselves by our height, so I was Jha Da' 5'9". Time went on. Some came, some stayed, some went. I'm still Calvin. He's still Ryan.

Dub MD: You now live in California, What made you wanna switch coasts and How are they feeling your music out there?

Junesflow: Nah, I plan to keep a home in Michigan and have spots in the places needed. Gotta have that snow! I woke up one morning and decided to go forward and sacrifice time away from the normal, and it's paying off.

Acting is an option now. I did some background work for now, but it's definitely sparked an interest. As soon as the best distribution for the project is in the pocket, it will help be a strong foundation for what I got in mind.

Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other artist out there?

Junesflow: I hate answering that question, but shit! I'm fuckin' incredible! You ain't never heard nobody like me, in my humble opinion.

Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as a emcee in 4 words, What would they be?

Junesflow: I'm The Shit Fool!

Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet, are you planning on going on tour anytime soon?

Junesflow: "June's 1st, 2009" is the album. In the months leading up to its release, updates will be made to the website for sure!

Dub MD: What is on tap for Junesflow for the rest of 2008/09 and beyond?

Junesflow: "June's 1st, 2009", "June's 2nd, 2010", and "Junes's 3rd, 2011" the albums! Movies are an option too. Peeps in Michigan can look forward to a caregiver location for medical marijuana as well. (Plug!)

Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?

Junesflow: Fuck yeah! Gobama! "The Rustic" Pt.1 is at www.junesflow.com! "The Rustic" Pt.2 will be there March 1st, 2009! "June's 1st, 2009" this Spring! Shout to Dub MD, Raptalk, Mark Da Spark, The M.I.C., WorldFlow Ent. Free Ill Gates! One!
