Raptalk is back with another Psycho+Logical-Records artist for a quick Q&A session, this time around we caught up with Sabac Red, former member of Non Phixon. Sabac sits down to let us know about his new album "The Ritual", his future plans and his thoughts on Hip Hop's treatment of pioneers. Make sure you pick up his new album "The Ritual" if you haven't already, it's in stores right now. Dub MD: Sabac, What's good?

Sabac Red: Chillin’ on the couch with my wife who is helping me type this interview because the journalism game has changed. Now the artists have to type up their own interviews, and believe me I am grateful for the interviews, but this is the fifth one tonight.

Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now?

Sabac Red: I have experienced racism, validation, criticism, travel, and an opportunity to make music without limits.

Dub MD: Coming from Brooklyn, what do you think of the New York music scene right now?

Sabac Red: I think there are a lot of amazing artists coming out of NYC. People need to search a little more to find them, but they are there. To me, that’s the music scene, that’s my music scene. The media should not dictate what one’s music scene is.

If that was the case, I would say it sucks right now, but NY has always and continues to have a great independent scene that is undeniable. That goes for hip hop, punk, metal, etc.

Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers?

Sabac Red: No. I don’t think the pioneers get the respect they deserve from commercial media and outlets. They do however, get tons of respect from the people. With that being said, fuck the media that doesn’t respect the pioneers and use what they created to profit and not give back.

Dub MD: Do you have a new project in the works? what's it called? and what can heads out there expect from it?

Sabac Red: There are a few things I am working on right now. The Collabo Collection Volume 3, the BK to the Bay mix CD, and a summer world 2009 tour. I am also going to be executive producing the album from my people Revolution of the Mind.

Dub MD: With this project, what artists & producers are you connecting with this time round?

Sabac Red: Not sure yet, but log on to www.myspace.com/sabac for up to date information.

Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now?

Sabac Red: Well, The Ritual is out on Psycho+Logical-Records which is cool, but the distribution with Koch sucks cock.

Dub MD: You've release a few mixtapes and albums over the past few years now, Where can fans out there get all your previous projects online?

Sabac Red: Soon you will be able to go to www.necrohiphop.com and get everything I have directly from me. I will have my own page that will be like iTunes minus the corporate control.

Dub MD: How do you feel you've changed as an emcee from your album "Sabacolypse" up until now with "The Ritual"?

Sabac Red: I feel I have evolved as a person, as a man, as a community leader, as a husband, and as an artist. With this evolvement and personal growth I was able to translate that into my music. If you listen to Sabacolypse it was more assertive and angry. The Ritual is more personal and hopeful.

Dub MD: Being creative and original emcee, why do you think it is that emcees with skills on the mic, never make a real mark on soundscan?

Sabac Red: I feel it is because of the lyrical content and often times the fear of people who understand, know and expose truth. The truth sometimes shows up and exposes the people who have the power to promote and give artists the push to sell units. Fuck them all!

Dub MD: You've got a lot of support from hip hop fans online, How important do you feel the internet is to an underground hip hop artist these days?

Sabac Red: Probably the most important thing aside from the music itself. It will make you or break you. We live in an A-D-D media world and as artists we must consistently grow with our fans and continue to make new ones using the internet as the main too.

Dub MD: Where do you get the inspiration to write the type of material you do? and what was the writing process like on your albums?

Sabac Red: The inspiration comes from many different sources and experiences. Some of them being, the young people I work with, the community work I do, books I read, the world and current events. Usually, I hear a beat and it presents a certain feeling to me. I know whether or not I like a beat within the first eight bars of listening to it.

If a beat makes me want to write usually a concept will pop into my head based on the sources and experiences I mentioned earlier. Once I get the first two lines out it doesn’t take long for me to complete the song.

Dub MD: Being a former member of Underground Hip Hop outfit Non-Phixon, Whats the status with Non-Phixon these days?

Sabac Red: There is no status. It was the past, no regrets, but the future is still now.

Dub MD: You now live in Oakland, What made you wanna switch coasts and How are they feeling your music out there?

Sabac Red: I fell in love, moved out to the Bay and people are loving the music. The Bay area has always been a place of liberals, progression, change, and evolvement. I feel very comfortable here.

Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other artist out there?

Sabac Red: I am not afraid to be a genuine nice guy. I don’t front for no one. I will always talk to fans, remain respectful to all my peers and not be afraid to speak my truth. You can however, get fucked up if you take my kindness for weakness.

Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as a emcee in 4 words, What would they be?

Sabac Red: Lyrical, Honest, Brooklyn & Change.

Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet, are you planning on going on tour anytime soon?

Sabac Red: Yes, I am currently planning a full-length 2009 summer world tour.

Dub MD: What is on tap for Sabac Red for the rest of 2008/2009 and beyond?

Sabac Red: As I said earlier, The Collabo Collection Volume 3, the BK to the Bay mix CD, and a summer 2009 world tour. I am also going to be executive producing the album from my people Revolution of the Mind.

Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?

Sabac Red: Those who bought the album, thank you for your support. Those who downloaded it for free, at least buy a ticket to a Sabac Red show in the future or die.
