Interview by Lunatic 63 Q: We’re here with Dubb; how you doing man? I’m doing beautiful. I’m working everyday, just trying to get better. Even if people say I’m the best, I am going to keep working to get better than the best. I’m in the lab everyday putting in work, I write every day. Q: Good to hear. How old were you when you started rapping and how did you know it was the right profession for you? I was about 17 years old when I started. I actually put down the basketball to start rapping. I thought I was going to be in the NBA, but it wasn’t for me. You know you got to have the grades to go along with it. So I put the basketball down and began rapping. 2Pac really influenced me and I was hearing all the music on the radio at the time and my opinion was that the music I was hearing wasn’t very good. I really felt like I could do better. I started writing, playing around and then it got serious. I fell in love with music and just took it from there. Q: Good stuff. You put out five mixtapes in 2007, how important is it for an artist to constantly have his name out there? It’s for the simple fact that you don’t want anybody to forget about you. You can be the hottest rapper in the world, but if you only put out albums every eight years or whatever, you are going to be forgotten. You have to keep your name in somebody’s ear, even if it’s the littlest thing like a guest appearance. You have to keep working and keep hitting them in the head with it, keep the work ethic up. Q: No doubt. Will 2008 be as busy for Dubb as 2007 was? What do you have planned for this year? Yeah, it’s gonna be even busier. As more connects come up, the more I have to do. I got a lot of features coming up in 08; I just stay in the studio. I don’t really do any shows, but I’m still getting my name out there. It’s kind of nuts to me that I’m getting my name out there without doing any shows, but I guess it’s all about the internet now in days. 2007 was busy, but I was just starting off with that other Game mixtape or whatever. Q: I see. Does this mean you are now working on a debut album? To be honest I’m not really working on an album right now, just a few mixtapes. But you can really consider my mixtapes like albums because it’s all original beats for the most part. My “South Central’s Own Pt.2” mixtape was all original beats besides a few. I’m working on a mixtape that’s going to be hosted by Hoodrat Miguel that is going to be entitled “Hoodz Finezt Radio.” That’s going to be all original beats, about 15-16 songs. It’s already done; we’re just putting it together now. I’m also working on volume three of my “South Central’s Own” mixtape, which might be the last installment in that series. I’m currently working on that, it’s gonna be hosted by Big Mike. You know Big Mike, right? Lunatic: Yea, I do I got a real busy schedule right now. Q: And what guest appearances can we expect to see on those two mixtapes? For those that really follow me, they can see I really don’t fuck with a lot of features. If I get a grip of features on my music, some people might say “he can’t do it himself” and I don’t want anybody to ever put that in their head. I wanna show people that I can do twenty hot songs on my mixtape by myself. South Central’s Own 3 might be a little different, we might have a few features on there. I’m not going to mention any names yet, but you’ll know it when it comes out. Big Mike is doing that one. Q: Cool. Your last single “I’m Shin’n” got a very lukewarm response, are their any plans on dropping a new single anytime soon? You know what, I really don’t plan it. If I’m in the lab and I’m making fire music, a single might come out of the gang of songs I’m doing. If that’s the case, of course a new single will come out. I just go in and do songs and I feel it's single material, then it’ll get put out as a single. Q: What’s your label situation like right now? We got our own camp, Hoodz Finezt right now. I’m currently unsigned, but I’m getting ready to branch off into a mainstream situation. I am just trying to get my buzz up right now. Anybody can walk into a label, but I am trying to make it look better than that for me. If a label sees that I have a big buzz and a cool fan base without the major help, it’ll help me as I go in there. So once I do go in and they see all the friends on the myspace and all the plays I get and they see me on different websites, they’ll realize I really took control of myself. They will see that I just need that extra help to blow up. I will just need the money to push it out there, because the music is there. The whole work ethic is there and I just need that extra push. I’ve actually had a few run-ins already. No meetings or anything like that, just ran into a few people. I hollered at a few different people, I was at LaFace records. I ran into Jazze Pha as well. The Game of course is another one. Other than that, not too many people. Q: No doubt. Give us the specifics on your group “Hoodz Finezt?” It’s a couple of people. It’s like the hood’s finest, it’s not all rappers. It’s more like a click or a gang. We got Lo Pro, Dre Vicious from Watts, Young Slap. It’s a couple of people. It’s all coming along and I can’t speak for some people. Those are the people that are here right now. I can’t say too many names and then you don’t hear from them because they never were official. Q: I understand that. How did the whole “Hoodz Finezt” situation come together? Actually myself and Lo Pro have known each other for a long time, from the beginning of high school. We came up with the name when we started rapping. That’s how it came about and it grew from there. Q: I see. How do you feel about the current state of the west coast? To be honest with you, we don’t really get the attention we deserve right now. We have the talent; it’s just the game shifts coasts. The south is hot right now and the east was hot about five years ago. Every coast has its turn and I know we are coming up next. There’s lots of talent out here that’s getting slept on. It’s not dead or nothing like that; just nobody is really paying attention. Once we hit them upside the head, it’s gonna be a wrap. Q: For sure. Which artist on the west coast are you currently feeling? I would say The Game ofcourse. RIP 2Pac ofcourse. That’s who I’m really feeing (2Pac). I sit back and listen to legends man. Not the young people, these legends. That is because I am still young and don’t want other people’s style rubbing off on me, that is why I just keep to myself. I can sit here all day and name some young talent on the west, they know who they are. Q: Are you still working with Black Wall Street? I would say its no love lost over here. From time to time you might hear me get on a Game mixtape. It’s not like I’m over there working, but they are the homies. I’m more doing my own thing. If Game hits me up and is like “come get on this tape” then I am there. That is the homie so anything that he needs, I got it. Q: How about Top Dawg Ent? I am. If they need something, I’ll be there. I got a lot of love for everyone. I don’t hate on nobody’s movement. I’m very humble and if anybody needs a verse from me, I am there no problem. Q: Do you have any last words for the fans? Basically just look out for me and follow the movement. Www.myspace.comofficialdubb. Look out for “South Central’s Own 3” and the “Hoodz Finest” mixtape coming soon after. Then I might even do “Mr. White 2”, that’s a lot of things coming. If you wanna know what I’m doing, stay on the myspace page. Also check out the video for “Go to war” directed by Taydoe. Yes sir.
