Raptalk.Net: We’re here with Jamie Drastik, an artist signed to Pitbull who is definitely doing big things. We want to give the people some insight on your background. Where does the name Jamie Drastik come from? Jamie Drastik: Jamie is my real name, my government [name]. Drastik is something when I was younger; when I performed I would be so excited that I had so much energy. It seemed to fit some of my performances when I was younger. I liked having Jamie because it signifies something real – my real name. Drastik is an adjective and a personality I hold on stage. Raptalk.Net: Cool! You referred your name directly to performing. Tell us a bit about your performances. Jamie Drastik: I just try to give it my all. There is a line in one of my songs coming up that says “When I hit the stage, I hit it like I’m one day away from the grave.” Every single time I perform I treat it like my last. It could very well be my last performance and I take it as a blessing. I give it all I got. Raptalk.Net: I like that. In your bio, you explain growing up I New York interestingly – tell us about that. Jamie Drastik: I grew up in a small town near New York called Poughkeepsie. It’s very interesting because we have a lot of different walks of life here which I explain in the bio. We have the frustrated hot soccer moms bringing their kids back and forth and we also have a big hip hop scene out here. We are not far from New York City at all; it’s only a thirty minute drive. Also, we’re not far away from the country so we’re kind of splat in the middle of every type of walk of life you can see. I try to grab a bit from all the different types of cultures around me. I’m not just the suburban kid or a city life kid. I have experience from all of them. Four out of seven days I’m in New York City. The other three days in a week, I’m in the suburbs. I can’t tell you I’m a city or suburban kid. I’ve been surrounded by all of it. Raptalk.Net: “Boom! I got your Girlfriend” is a radio smash. Tell our readers about that record. Jamie Drastik: That’s a record I did when I was spending time in Miami. I heard people talking about the original record which came out with MC Luscious and then also re done by 2 Live Crew. When I heard it, it was a Miami regional hit and never reached up to New York because I never heard it before. I did some research on the record and I really liked it. I wanted to give it more of a universal sound. It already had a core fan base in Miami and a Miami feel to it. Now it’s getting love universally. We kept the Miami influence to it but also added a universal sound. That’s where the idea came from. I really gave it an original flavor. Raptalk.Net: That’s something that appears on “The Magnet” mixtape – let’s dive into that. Jamie Drastik: “The Magnet” mixtape is the complete definition of exactly who I am from top to bottom. The reason why I named it “The Magnet” is because in the stage I’m at right now in my career, I don’t have a high end publicist or a huge marketing budget or promotional budget. My thought process was to make the absolute best music that I could to the point where it becomes magnetic and people are drawn into it. I’m not going to necessarily be able to throw out as far or reach as many people, but if I can make it as magnetic as possible to the point where it’s drawing in people; the actual mixtape becomes a magnet. It touches people’s souls and magnetizes people into it. That’s the whole thought process behind “The Magnet.” The mixtape is really an entire outlook of me. I party, I got a record deal but I still hold a job. I’m signed to one of the biggest artists in the world right now but I hold a job as well. This music industry is not a game. I’m not embarrassed at all. I do exactly what I have to do to survive. It talks about all that on “The Magnet.” It’s very honest and whether it makes me look vulnerable or not the coolest guy in the room, I really don’t give a shit. Being honest with the listeners and fans is number one to me. I think like this because I feel like we’ve been lied to for so long and all these guys have so much money, cars and their house is so big and their jewelry is so bright – at the end of the day it’s all one big fuckin’ lie. I feel like being honest is actually unique right now. I’m doing something unique just by telling the truth. Download 'The Magnet" mixtape here: http://usershare.net/6580c23ikqeyRaptalk.Net: Wow, I like that. Speaking of it being a magnet, 50 Cent is praising the mixtape and it’s all over www.thisis50.com. How did that co sign feel? How did it come about? Jamie Drastik: That felt amazing. 50 Cent is somebody I look up to not only as a great artist but he’s very ambitious. I don’t think there can be more of an ambitious story than a guy that almost lost his life to come back and be the number one artist in the game at one point. More than the music, I’ve learned a lot from his ambition. I got on 50’s website because a friend of me, DJ Killa’ Touch is Jadakiss’ DJ and they had him guest spot and DJ a cipher. 50 comes out with this cipher called “Mic Check Live.” He told me about it a week beforehand and he told me he could get me on it; I said for sure, let’s go. He got me on it and he told the people listen if you want to have me DJ, you have to let me bring an artist by and they said ok. They didn’t know my friend was going to be bringing James Dean along with him so they looked at him like “who the fuck did you just bring?” (laughs). By the end, it was love and daps, interviews, photos, exchanging contact information and so on. They really embraced me. Anything I do, they keep an eye out for and if it makes sense for their website, they definitely post it. Raptalk.Net: How did the situation with Pitbull come about? Jamie Drastik: I was pushing a record last summer called “Now or Later” and I was pushing it by myself straight off my own computer. I was calling radio stations and talking to program directors. I got it up to a pretty significant amount of spins where it was catching the eyes of major labels. All of the labels were offering me deals where they wanted to take my publishing and just really disrespectful deals. Pitbull came into the picture and told me listen, I respect what you’re doing and I come from the independent game too – I keep all my publishing and I wanted to sign with someone who was going to be more hands on with my project rather than me calling the label and I got sent from the secretary to the assistant and I can’t anybody on the phone. Me and Pitbull have a really good relationship where I can call him and ask him for advice. I feel comfortable with him. Not only did I sign with a label, I signed with an artist who built something from the ground up as well. Raptalk.Net: So what’s next up for Jamie overall? Jamie Drastik: Right now we’re pushing the mixtape which is getting great responses. We’re pushing “Boom! I Got your Girlfriend” but the big single which will be out this Spring is called “I’m Popular” and Pitbull will be featured on it and we have another big feature for it that I can’t disclose yet but you guys will get the first crack at it. The record is called “I’m Popular” and it’s a big radio record. God willing that will keep me busy all summer. Raptalk.Net: Hopefully! I really appreciate your time Jamie. We’re going to end it on that note. Do you have any last words before I let you go? Jamie Drastik: Please continue to support the mixtape – they can check it out at www.jamiedrastikforfree.com. They can download it there for free. Continue to support. Any interview radio station or camera, I always say anybody who wants to have me, I’m always showing up for.
