Questions asked by: Lunatic 63
Q: We’re here with Deztined, how you doing man? I’m doing pretty good man, not bad at all.
Q: Good stuff. First off, tell us about how you got into producing? That’s a long story man (laughs). I actually started off as a rapper around the age of twelve. I also played the piano and I’ve always been musically oriented. I then got myself a beat machine at around the age of four-teen, and I just started from there; It’s become like an obsession (laughs).
Q: I see. What made you trade the mic in for the boards? I just liked producing much more than rapping. I enjoy the technical side of things. Rapping is another talent, and I wasn’t bad at it. I just like the music more; I have a vision for it. I enjoy using artists to help me create what I hear.
Q: Real talk. What are your favorite instruments to use while making a beat? My favorite instrument to use out of all of them is pro tools. I enjoy using the Roland Fantom as well. I use the old school Yamaha samplers (laughs). I also play a little guitar here and their - I also got a couple of secrets I don’t like sharing with anybody (laughs).
Q: Sounds cool man. What producers have you been inspired by? Of course Dr. Dre - Timbaland and I have always been a fan of Teddy Riley as well. Dark Child and DJ Quik are two other big ones. Not just Hip Hop producers, but musicians in general. I love Rock N’ Roll, especially the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Smokey Robinson has also been a big inspiration to me - So many different musicians of different genres have inspired me and I think that is what makes a good producer. Anyone who does not limit themselves to one specific genre. If you just like/or do Hip Hop records, it really limits you.
Q: So does that mean we can expect to see you do some music outside of hip-hop? Yeah, I try and do a little bit of everything. I’d love to do some Rock, Pop, Soul. Just a little bit of everything really.
Q: I see. Let’s get into the MathMadix, how did you meet Knoc-turn’al and the rest of the crew? Knawledg was working on a mixtape compilation; I believe it was mixtape #2 for him. I did a bass line for Knawledg, and I met Knoc through him. I submitted a beat to him (Knoc). He liked it, and we just continued working on music ever since then. I did link up with Knawledg before Knoc though, worked a lot with him (Knawledg) first and fore most. We mesh well together and that’s what lead to me being introduced to Knoc. Ripacut has always been around Knawledg as well, so it’s always been like a homie-homie thing.
Q: So tell us about the tracks you’ve done for “The Book Of Knoc” and what can you tell us about them? We’ve recorded a lot man (laughs). I’ve done about over 100 tracks for the MathMadix. Knoc took some of those beats, and same goes with Ripacut and Knawledg. We really just work together as a team and make great music. They can pick out whatever beats they’d like and put them on whichever projects they want.
Q: Good stuff. How many tracks can we expect to hear yon on the upcoming Knawledg solo album? A lot (laughs). It really depends on how many of them he decides to pick for the final product. I’d say at least five will make it though.
Q: And what about Ripacut and Big Tyme? Have you been working on their respective solo albums? I did about three bangers for the Big Tyme solo album. Ripacut is still in the process of recording his album; we already have a lot of material recorded. I’m going to keep making more with him though - We are just gonna continue making good music.
Q: A lot of producers now in days release have been releasing compilation albums; can you ever see yourself doing something like that? At this point, maybe. Right now, I would only like to work at getting all the MathMadix albums released. I’ve had their backs since day one and I just wanna see them be successful before I consider doing something like that. I want to see to that until the end, and then maybe I’ll focus on a compilation album. Right now, it’s all about the MathMadix.
Q: Makes sense. If you could produce a record for any artist dead or alive, who would it be? Jimi Hendrix.
Q: Why? I pick Jimi, because he was vicious on that guitar man. He was just an overall genius with his music. I think that we would make a real soulful song together.
Q: I see. What do you think about the state of producing in hip hop right now? I think there is a lot of one hit producers right now, just like in all types of music. I would like to see more consistent producers, getting more flexible like some legends out there. More producers working outside of just the genre they specialize in - You look at Dr. Dre and he has his records with 50 Cent and so on, but he’s also done stuff with Gwen Stefani. Even Timbaland has done stuff with someone like Justin Timberlake. So overall, I just want to see more dynamics from producers.
Q: Makes sense. Which rising hip hop artist is your favorite right now? I have to go with Knawledg, that dude is for real. I work with a lot of different artists, but he’s the most consistent. He has it all; the drive, motivation, work ethic and plus he has a genius mind. He’s always on point. Although he isn’t a big name yet, when he is, people are gonna respect his grind, talent and work ethic.
Q: Are you currently working with any other artists you’d like to let us know about? Yeah, I’m working with a dude by the name of Raymond Redd on his “Blocc Snow” album. This guy is something vicious on the mic. Also my boy Kydos, he’s been grinding his ass off and making great music. A group by the name of Tha Formula, I’ve been doing some stuff with them. They got a very unique style. I also just started working with I-Roc and his label 5th Coast Records; I’m looking forward to making hits with them. Also my homie J-Beam, I’m looking forward on collaborating with him for his album.
Q: Cool. Any last words before I let you go? Shout out to my parents, my family, my beautiful children, and my MathMadix family. Look out for Arizona, thanks for all the support and love and will see you in the future.
