Dub MD: Educated Rapper, What's good? Educated Rapper: I'm multitasking, taking a breather from college this summer. In the fall I will have completed my Baccalaureate degree in Liberal Arts (Concentration in communication). Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now? Educated Rapper: You're kicking with a Golden Age member of hip-hop. Under my vision, coaching and encouragement we took over Brooklyn and moved to the top of the most talked about rap groups in the Borough of Brooklyn. We went on to become the 1st hip-hop and break dance team. Doc Ice and Kangol danced from Whodini along with Jermaine Dupri. We were the 1st rap group to deliver a hit ballad. We released 5 albums through Jive RCA and Select Records, that sold nationally and globally. The Lethal album made it to #2 on the Billboard charts with Michael Jackson @ #1 and Stevie Wonder @ #3. We released a monster single "Roxanne Roxanne" that spawned 33 answer backs. "Roxanne Roxanne" sparked careers for Roxanne Shante, Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie. Ludicrous mentioned that “Roxanne Roxanne” was the 1st single his parents purchased for him. Keith Murray stated “I was inspired by his style. Lil Kim mentioned “Educated Rapper’s style was my favourite in UTFO. Miss Elliot paid tribute to my flow on her song “Funky Fresh Dressed.” Scores of DJ’s, film makers, producers, A&R’s you name it were inspired by UTFO. We rocked the legendary Fresh Fess tours with our live shows. Dub MD: Coming from Brooklyn, what do you think of the New York music scene right now? Educated Rapper: Lil Wayne is killing it with the Carter III along with the Jay Z remix. Busta’s holding it down heavy along with Papoose is strong arming cats with Kay Slay through his mixtape momentum. Funk Flex and others are giving throwback music a significant amount of spins in New York. Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers? Educated Rapper: Big dogs like Diddy, Jigga and 50 have increased the net worth range a rap artist can reach and it looks like some of rappers / moguls will become billionaire’s and be the first to do it in our area. The fact that an artist can now cover a fashion line, act, be an entrepreneur in addition to their main talent has powerful leverage. The money game has been forwarded back into the hands of the business savvy rap artists as opposed to just the corporate super powers that we don't see. As far as mass media is concerned the internet is a powerful platform for revenue with ring tones just to name a few. With a strong team a hip-hop dream of wealth can easily be actualised in today’s market. Dub MD: Do you have a new album in the works? Can you tell us a little about that and what can heads out there expect from it? Educated Rapper: Mixmaster Ice and myself are putting our heads together on a project. I have a title for my EP / Album that I will divulge at a later date. Mixmaster Ice's influence among the "Core DJs" nationally and worldwide is powerful so when we're ready to start dropping singles it wont be a problem. Check out www.mixmasterice.com the 16th's hottest radio show in the world according to statistics. Right now I'm putting together audio visuals for the "Million Program" (www.millionnyc.com) spearheaded in conjunction with a Harvard University representative. I am the hip-hop spokesman, public speaker for the purposes of this project. I'm completing a collaboration with a band by the name of "Bridge" which is a project that has bridged the gap between classic hip-hop and vintage music that grown folks can digest, enjoy and nod their heads to. We already have hot radio singles laid out and we're recording more. It will consist of myself, Bridge (a sexy female vocalist) and heavy hitting musicians that have played for some of the greats. Dub MD: With this project, what artists & producers are you connecting with this time round? Educated Rapper: I'm pragmatic when it comes to music. If a producer has a banger and it's smashing or competing with today's market I drop my pen game to it and workout a win win business arrangement. Celebrities have hit me up @ www.myspace.com/educatedrapper or www.myspace.com/therealutfo offering assistance along with radio, DJ’s, engineers etc. Dub MD: Your part of the legendary Hip Hop outfit UTFO, For those who don't know can you tell us how you all hooked up back in the day? Educated Rapper: Mixmaster Ice and myself were DJing for before UTFO and I decided to form a group. I had a group in place already but decided I wanted to formulate a camp with strong lead vocals. I bumped into Kangol at a basement party and few days later we decided to form a group. Kangol introduced Doctor Ice and we began grinding out songs from there. Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now? Educated Rapper: I'm a free agent right now! Dub MD: How do you think you've changed as an emcee from your classic record "Roxanne, Roxanne" up until now in 2008? Educated Rapper: I stepped up and advanced my pen game. I listen to all the hot artists from every region so my ear hustle has been upgraded. I analysed hip-hop for a good minute and I am an aggressive observer so I don't miss a metaphor. Dub MD: What do you think is you're most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other emcee out there? Educated Rapper: I'm not locked into a fixed style so I can surprise listeners with new dimensions of sound at any given time. I'm interested in saying something thought provoking that entertains the listener as well. I'm well read and raised my level of thought in college, thus I bring new and powerful paradigms to my music. I'm interested in rocking a listener’s brain frame. Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as an artist in 4 words, What would they be? Educated Rapper: A Leader, Scholarly, Legendary and Gifted. Dub MD: For your fans that haven't seen you perform yet, are you planning on going on a tour anytime soon? Educated Rapper: Not yet. I'm recording right now. I'm making 2 guest appearances in June 2008 one of them at the Apollo with Full Force, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and Cherly Pepsi Riley. No heavy touring yet just spot dates for now. Dub MD: What is on tap for Educated Rapper for the rest of 2008 and beyond? Educated Rapper: I'm on the Dean's list at The College of New Rochelle holding down a grade point average of 4.1 and graduating Valedictorian / Magna Cum Laude is looking good right now. Once my new project is up and running I'll start doing shows with Mixmaster Ice as well as Bridge. Be on the lookout for freestyles on www.mixmasterice.com. Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs? Educated Rapper: To artists be original, be yourself and bring new heat to the airwaves. All my lyricists let’s bring that back to the forefront. All the supporters who hit me up on www.myspace.com/educatedrapper and www.myspace.com/therealutfo One Love.
