Dub MD: Fresh Daily, What's good? Fresh Daily: I'm chillin' man, finishing up some great projects. Dub MD: For those who don't know, could you just give a short review of what you've experienced in your rap career up until now? Fresh Daily: Well, I've performed across America and performed with acts like, Sean Price, Boot Camp Click, Wale, Blu, Evidence, Black Milk, Tanya Morgan, Ice T, Big Daddy Kane, Krs-One, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Q-tip, etc. I've done, CMJ, Scribble Jam, Rocksteady, Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, City Sol festival, etc. Dub MD: Coming from Brooklyn, what do you think of the New York hip hop scene right now? Fresh Daily: It's getting crazy, the upper echelon of the indie hip-hop musicians are making a name for themselves and carving out distinctive lanes. There are some who want to be weird for the sake of being different and standing out and there truly distinct original artists. The posers are muddling things some, because individual style in New York City can become popular trend very quickly. Overall, people are feeling less afraid of being themselves. It's nice to have this resurgence of do-it-yourself artists. Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers? Fresh Daily: Commercialisation of Hip-hop? Anytime something becomes popular, there will be someone smart figuring out how to make money from it. This is the way of the world. The important thing of it as a musician, is if someone will make money from your art from, make sure its you! Dub MD: Do you have a new album / mixtape in the works? what's it called? and what can heads out there expect from it? Fresh Daily: I have an album just wrapped up called, "Fresh Daily Is The Gorgeous Killa In Crimes of Passion" that's coming out through High Water Music. Dub MD: With this project, what artists & producers are you connecting with this time round? Fresh Daily: Of course the homie Illmind, Oh No, Dj Spinna, Ski, 88 Keys, 2 Hungry Brothers, Analogic and as far as artists I've got Tanya Morgan, Outtasight, P.Casso, Cool Calm Pete, Substantial and a few more I don't wanna let out the bag. Dub MD: How do you feel you've changed as an emcee from your first two releases "Life Music" & "Treats" up until now in 2008? Fresh Daily: Well, obviously the name change is one, but I've been blessed with better beats, grown more with my wordplay as an emcee, been fortunate to travel and see more and incorporate that into my music and just bring the freshness. Dub MD: What's your label situation like just now? Fresh Daily: Well High Water is the current label I'm on. We're small but we have distribution, we have promotion, and we have a good publicist. It's run by Sucio Smash and we're putting out DJ Spinna's next hip-hop project, we putting out a couple of solid, good albums. Dub MD: Where do you get the inspiration to write the type of material you do? and what was the writing process like on your albums? Fresh Daily: My writing is just based off of reality. Things I see and experience. Its also based off of wants and needs and issues, so thankfully its relatively grounded in that aspect. Hopefully a lot of people can relate. Dub MD: Being a creative and original emcee, why do you think it is that emcees with skills on the mic, never make a real mark on soundscan? Fresh Daily: I dunno man, I like Kanye, I like Lupe, they seem to be doing well. At the same time , I like Elzhi and I like Phonte, and well they're probably more financially comfortable than I am but not at Kanye / Lupe level yet. Dub MD: You've got a lot of support from hip hop fans online, How important do you feel the internet is to an underground hip hop these days? Fresh Daily: The internet is the number one marketing tool for an independent musician right now. Its so imperative to utilize the net for your music. People don't even watch TV as much as they're online these days it feels. Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other emcee out there? Fresh Daily: Um, good question. I'll ask you one. My voice, my style, my songs sound like whose? Nobody's. I kinda just do my own thing. At the same time I know my boundaries, I can't sing or dance, so you won't see me going that route. I'm not skinny, so you won't catch me wearing skinny clothes. I'm not a dick rider either, if rapping in auto tune is the flavour of the the day. I'll pass, thank you. Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as an emcee in 4 words, What would they be? Fresh Daily: Fun, Flow, Fresh & Flavor. Dub MD: For your fans who haven't seen you perform yet, are you planning on going on tour anytime soon? Fresh Daily: Soon, keep an eye on the myspace. (www.myspace.com/freshdotdaily) Dub MD: What is on tap for Fresh Daily for the rest of 2008 and beyond? Fresh Daily: A mixtape, the album, the world. Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs? Fresh Daily: Thanks to everyone to listens. There's no definitive "rules" to this shit. Just make sure that you can rap on beat, you have flow, you're saying something important people can relate to, and your beat is hot. Hip-hop is big enough for everyone, although not everyone should be in hip-hop. To the haters, my success should inspire you, not make you angry. I experienced my first real hater recently. If you're a hater, you probably think you're better and deserve my success. Work towards that instead of talking about it. Um, um, Yo, shout out to the whole AOK Collective! P.Casso, 2 Hungry Bros, Print, Nola Darling, Homeboy Sandman, 8thw1! Shout out Sucio Smash! Shout out IHMDJ, Correct Clothing, Brooklyn Surfer and Brian Wood!
